A Chilean kayaker had a terrifying Jonah moment when he was swallowed whole by a humpback whale off Chilean Patagonia – before being miraculously spat back out.
Adrian Simancas was kayaking in the Strait of Magellan in Bahía El Águila when the massive whale emerged from the water and easily gobbled up the young man and his yellow kayak – all while his father, Dell, was filming.
“At first I thought I had died,” Adrian said. “It was like, of course, a lot of terror because I thought no, no, there was nothing I can do.”
“I thought it had already eaten me and swallowed me.”
After he was freed from the whale’s mouth, his father can be heard telling his son to stay calm, but Adrian says he was worried his father would be swallowed up too. Fortunately, the young man was able to swim to his father and the pair made it safely to shore.
Whale attacks on humans are exceedingly uncommon, and although shaken up, Adrian seems to be very zen about the incident now that he is on land. “It was probably out of curiosity that the whale had approached me, or maybe to communicate something.”
I was thinking of going kayaking at Sea Point this weekend, but after seeing this I reckon f*ck that, I’d rather go to the pub.
