You might recall news of that strange incident at OR Tambo International Airport, in which a French woman allegedly threw her dog over a third-floor balcony in the early hours.
The incident took place in November 2024 and caused public outrage as the dog sustained serious injuries and had to be euthanised.
It turns out that the woman died in a hospital a few days later.
Speaking to IOL, Jacques Peacock, spokesperson for The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) confirmed the woman’s passing.
“According to information received by us, the woman died on 25 November 2024 in Thembisa Hospital following reports of her suffering from mental illness.”
The French woman was travelling from France to Johannesburg, on her way to Brazil, according to the NSPCA. After purchasing a ticket for the extra “passenger” she boarded the plane with her dog and arrived in South Africa on November 6, 2024.
The NSPCA revealed that surveillance footage from the Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) captured the woman strolling casually through the Atrium, her small black dog trotting freely by her side.
Then, in a shocking and inexplicable act, she suddenly scooped up the dog—and hurled it over the balcony.
She was denied passage on her flight to Brazil and was swiftly apprehended. Authorities later confirmed that she had been taken to a medical facility.
A case of animal cruelty was opened for investigation by the South African Police Services (SAPS), but the woman died before she could state her case.
