Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell are doing what they do best in this new Amazon Prime romcom, providing some fun on-screen chemistry and real LOL moments.
You’re Cordially Invited isn’t going to make you forget Bride Wars, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bridesmaids and Father Of The Bride anytime soon, but it will certainly add something to the canon of wedding romantic comedies that we all love so much.
The premise is simple, and director Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) lets the cast shine. It’s set at the scenic Lake Oconee outside of Atlanta, with a charming, old-school vibe. The catch? The Palmetto Inn can only handle one wedding per weekend, but due to a mix-up, two weddings get booked.
Margot (Witherspoon), who’s determined to throw the perfect wedding for her sister Neve, and Jim (Ferrell), who wants to give his daughter Jenni a dream wedding despite struggling to let go, both show up at the front desk. Since Margot paid the deposit, she gets first dibs. But after seeing Jim and his crew in a bind, she agrees to share the space. Chaos (and plenty of laughs) ensues as both weddings race to beat the sunset by the lake.
You can cut the tension with a knife, and as expected, things don’t go smoothly for Jim and Margot. While scrambling to pull off their chaotic weddings, they also end up learning a lot about their families—and, surprise, surprise, sparks start flying between them too.
Lately, streaming comedies have been missing the mark big time. From the cringy Vacation Friends movies to Amazon’s disaster Space Cadet and Netflix’s flop Back in Action with Diaz and Foxx—it’s been rough out there.
Despite all the low bars in place, there’s a surprising amount of low-rent fun to be had with You’re Cordially Invited, “a simple and silly crowd-pleaser smartly reliant on the high wattage appeal of two, top-of-game professionals”, per The Guardian.
“The real win here is watching Witherspoon and Ferrell show off, both unrestrained by a harder rating and a more raucous script than the norm and while their escalation of bad behaviour might not be quite as bad as it could have been, they both make for wonderfully petty antiheroes.”
Looks like this invitation is worth accepting.
You’re Cordially Invited is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
