This has got to be one of the more shocking gender-based violence cases to hit South Africa in recent months.

A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of a girl who refused to kiss him. He is also sentenced to three years for illegal possession of a firearm, and one year for illegal possession of ammunition.

Exactly, why does this child have access to a weapon? And what the heck kind of world made him think murder was the answer to being rejected?

“The accused shot and killed Naeema Marshall, 14 years at the time of the incident, who was visiting her aunt in Kleinvlei on Monday, July 17, 2023, after she refused to give him a kiss,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg.

The Grade 9 pupil from Beacon Valley High School was shot in her head on Monday, July 17. She was gunned down in what is believed to be a fit of rage after she rejected advances from the teenage boy, who fled the scene after killing the poor girl.

IOL learned the teenage shooting is alleged to be affiliated with the Dixie Boys gang.

While kids across the country started their third term of school, Naeema’s family planned the burial of their 14-year-old daughter in Mitchells Plain.

Naeema’s mother, Fadeema Marshall, 45, is struggling with the loss of her baby girl, who was the youngest of five children.

“She was on holiday at her dad’s cousin. The boy who shot her is known to her. A neighbour said Naeema went to the shop for her aunt. The neighbour went to the shop and asked Naeema to buy something for her as well. As she walked away she realised Naeema was taking too long and went to check where she was.

“She and the boy who shot her were in an argument. He liked her and she didn’t. He then told her: ‘jy sal sien jy (you will see)’ and Naeema said she was not afraid.

“She walked back to her aunt’s house. He (the shooter) went upstairs and shot her on the left side of her head,” Marshall told IOL.

The case was handled by the Provincial Organised Crime and Anti-Gang Unit, whose investigation secured crucial evidence and witness statements.

“The accused was found guilty on November 28, 2024, for the charges that were brought before court.”

The teen killer was kept behind bars throughout the gruelling trial as the court dissected every detail of the crime. Fortunately, the prosecutors built an airtight case that left no room for doubt, sealing his fate.

The sentences will run concurrently, meaning the teenager will serve 10 years behind bars.

Twigg confirmed that the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court delivered the ruling on Tuesday, January 28, closing the case.
