Pregnancy is a very important stage in women where great physical, mental and hormonal changes occur during several months.
During this period, dental care becomes crucial because drastic changes such as tooth loss can be noticed if not handled carefully.
Pregnant women may begin to feel that their teeth are loose, it is important to maintain good daily oral hygiene, good use of dental floss and a healthy diet that also allows the baby to not only develop in its growth but also begin to have healthy teeth since these begin their formation before birth.
There are many countries where thousands of tourists visit annually to get the best dental care and procedures. One of those countries is Turkey, getting your teeth done in Turkey is a great recommendation but there are several things to take into account. We will explain them in another article.
What dental problems or diseases can occur during pregnancy?
Among the diseases we have:
Caries: In pregnant women it can occur as a common disease, since they alter their usual diet due to certain food cravings such as excessive consumption of sugars that can cause cavities to appear on the surface of the teeth, especially in the molars.
Gingivitis: It is a disease that affects the gums and causes inflammation, redness and irritation. During pregnancy, women have high amounts of estrogen that make blood circulation a little more exaggerated, thus causing changes in the skin tissues. Therefore, this disease can appear in approximately 60% of pregnant women.
Pregnancy tumor: These are small cysts that can appear during the months of pregnancy in the gum tissue and that can disappear during the postpartum period. If it causes any other type of problem, you can go to a specialist to have them removed.
Xerostomia: This is a hormonal change where the woman has a constant dry mouth and can combat it by consuming a lot of water or candy with little or no sugar.
Sialorrhea: It is the opposite of xerostomia, in this case the pregnant woman who has it usually has excessive amounts of saliva, the only difference is that this type of pathology only lasts during the first weeks of pregnancy.
Among some other problems are:
Loose teeth: It is normal for a woman to have loose teeth during pregnancy since the body generates high amounts of estrogen and progesterone that loosen the tissues that support the teeth.
Tooth loss: The pH of the saliva in pregnant women changes, making it more difficult to control the acids generated by bacteria. When this happens, they are more prone to suffer from certain diseases such as cavities, and if it is not treated in time and there is no good oral hygiene, whatever it generates can cause the total loss of the tooth.
Dental care that women should take during pregnancy:
The first and most important thing is daily and correct oral hygiene. Pregnant women need to pay more attention to this part because by changing their eating habits they tend to be more prone to any type of oral disease that if not treated can cause future problems such as tooth loss.
A good diet is crucial for oral care. Pregnant women need to consume the necessary amounts of vitamins A and D, folic acid, among others.
During pregnancy, women can take advantage of certain treatments that are allowed, such as good oral hygiene, root canal treatment, and treatment of bacterial infections, among others.
It is important that pregnant women not only have prenatal check-ups but also schedule an appointment with their dentist for routine check-ups and thus prevent any pathology or incident that may affect their teeth. Even if they need an x-ray, this can be done without any problem since the radiation is very low.
The rise in recent years of having a beautiful and impactful smile in social and work environments has caused people today to pay a little more attention to their oral health. Although pregnant women experience hormonal changes, studies have shown that a good percentage of them are aware of their oral health.
