Vanity Fair dropped a bombshell story on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry last week, including allegations that the Duchess of Sussex’s team had a “conversation” with a publishing house about a potential “post-divorce” book.

This hectic story made “a bad time worse” for the couple, an old friend of Harry’s who still lives in the UK told The Daily Beast.

The VF article, by Anna Peele, alleged that “a rumour” has circulated in “the book world” that “Meghan’s team had a conversation with a publishing house to gauge interest” in a book about “a post-Harry divorce.” To quote Vanity Fair:

“Not a general book on life after marital dissolution, or one about Meghan’s past experience (She was married to producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2014). This book—this notion of a book, really—might center on a post-Harry divorce. Not that there was actually one in the works! Just…if this a priori divorce ever came to be, would this publisher theoretically be interested in a book that took place in its aftermath?”

To confuse the matter, the article later states that “everyone” testifies that Harry and Meghan appear to be deeply in love and are “so hot for each other.”

One insider also told the outlet that “If that’s true to any degree, she would have been approached and not vice versa” and Vanity Fair confirmed that “no offer was ever made, and no manuscript was produced,” since there was no divorce.

A friend, who remains in contact with both William and Harry, despite the brothers’ bitter feud, told the Daily Beast that the Vanity Fair divorce story “seemed very unfair.”

“There was a book but there wasn’t a book, she was planning for life after divorce, but they are totally in love. What? There was not a shred of evidence.”

The friend further noted how “Things aren’t easy for them right now”, as Meghan’s new cooking show has been ridiculed and postponed, and Harry has a gruelling court case coming up, which “Vanity Fair have succeeded in making a bad time worse.”

Piers Morgan also consistently adds fuel to the fire. The controversial former CNN anchor who now runs one of the biggest YouTube news channels in the world accused Meghan and Harry of “cynical” self-promotion, including their public visits to Los Angeles fire relief centres, calling them “disaster tourists”.

Morgan argued that the fact they have kept their titles is “ridiculous, given the damage they’ve caused to the institution that bestowed them upon them.”

He added: “Nothing they’ve tried since which doesn’t involve trashing their family has worked. So now they’re running around trying to behave like a rival royal family, and I find it pretty sickening, actually.”

Okay, Piers, reign that jealousy and projected embarrassment in.

Harry is set to return to the UK soon to continue that blockbuster trial against News Group Newspapers, the publisher of UK tabloid The Sun, which Harry claims used deeply unethical and illegal methods to gather stories about him for years.

Friends of Prince William say he has no interest in meeting up with his brother after all that was said in Harry’s memoir Spare.

At this rate, one might even say that it is the Sussexes who are making their bad times even worse.
