A local businessman is catching flak – and possibly a criminal record – after a video of him force-feeding a fish beer went viral on social media.

Ja, you read that right. A fish. And beer. The combo only makes sense when the fish is ethically caught, kindly killed and respectfully battered, my bru.

The now-infamous clip, which first made waves on TikTok before spreading to every corner of the internet has South Africans fuming.

In the video, the guy proudly pours a bottle of Sol Beer straight down the fish’s gullet. To add insult to injury, the beer is seen dripping all over the poor creature like some bizarre seafood marinade gone wrong.

Needless to say, the public isn’t impressed, but the man’s not just facing the wrath of Saffas on social media. According to The South African, Jacques Peacock from the SPCA has confirmed they’ve launched an investigation into this fishy business and aim to press criminal charges.

It’s anyone’s guess whether the man, who vlogged his fishing adventure like he was auditioning for a reality show, planned to chow down on the fish or toss it back into the water – now with a hangover.

Peacock and his team are aiming to have the man criminally prosecuted under the Animals Protection Act, describing the act as downright disgusting. The provisional charges? Sections 2(1)(a), (n), (q), and (r) of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. Don’t worry if those numbers mean nothing to you – just know they’re not exactly cause for celebration.

For those who don’t have the legislation memorised, here’s the gist: if found guilty, our fish-boozing entrepreneur could face a fine or even jail time. Offenders could also be slapped with a denial of ownership – basically banning them from owning animals – along with the shiny new accessory of a criminal record.

Nice one.

The SPCA takes cruelty to ALL animals very seriously, very much including fish and snakes. Just recently, the animal rights organisation revealed how a Limpopo man identified as Dirk de Jager was successfully prosecuted over a video of him exposing a live snake trapped in a jar to the smoke of a marijuana joint.
