The Plett community was left in shock after a video went viral that showed a panga-wielding man attacking an elderly couple.
The terrifying video was posted to Facebook by Andre Snyman eBlockwatch, who offered a R10,000 reward to anyone who might be able to assist in identifying the attacker.
Fortunately, after less than 24 hours, the same page posted an update confirming that the culprit was apprehended by the local Qolweni community, who handed him over to SAPS.
The video is pretty upsetting, so don’t watch it if you are easily disturbed by these kinds of things.
Posting to Facebook, Snyman said “Social media plays a crucial role in overcoming the “high blockage” often imposed to suppress crime information, particularly in areas reliant on tourism. Suppressing incidents to protect economic interests is short-sighted, as it prevents communities from being aware, mobilizing, and solving problems effectively.”
Just as shark spotters raise alerts to save lives, crime spotters on platforms like social media or eblockwatch create awareness and enable communities to respond swiftly.
It takes a village to stay safe these days, so well done to the Plett community for getting this thug off the streets.
