The only thing better than Robert De Niro in a gangster flick is two Robert De Niros in a gangster flick – a double dose of De Niro.

That’s the case in The Alto Knights, which reunites De Niro with director Barry Levinson. The pair had previously collaborated on films like political satire Wag the Dog and Bernie Madoff biopic The Wizard of Lies.

The Alto Knights is written by Goodfellas author Nicholas Pileggi, with De Niro in dual roles as real-life crime lords Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. Once the best of friends, a series of betrayals has ripped them apart, and as can be expected, the movie sees Genovese trying to kill Costello as their quest for control of New York threatens to permanently transform the Mafia.

Vito Genovese was an Italian-born American mobster and childhood friend and associate of the legendary Lucky Luciano. Genovese took part in the Castellammarese War and helped Luciano shape the new American Mafia’s rise as a major force in organized crime in the United States. He would later lead Luciano’s crime family, which would in 1957 be renamed by the FBI as the Genovese Crime Family – after its then boss Vito.

The biographical crime drama, initially titled Wise Guys, was in the works from as early as the 1970s but over the decades was passed on by every major studio.

The Alto Knights is scheduled to be released on March 21, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
