The discovery of Piet Christian Bester’s lifeless body on January 12 at his smallholding near Bloemfontein has left the Glen district reeling.

Free State police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the harrowing murder of the former Currie Cup rugby player and retired magistrate.

At around 9am, a worker stumbled upon the horrifying scene: Bester, 63, lying in a pool of blood, his body riddled with multiple stab wounds. The tragedy spurred the local farming community into action, and their swift cooperation with law enforcement proved instrumental in bringing the suspects to book.

“Thanks to the invaluable support of the farming community, we were able to swiftly apprehend two suspects,” said police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle, per IOL.

“This arrest marks a breakthrough and demonstrates the importance of collaboration between the community and law enforcement in combating crime.”

Police have called on the public to step forward with any additional details that might shed light on this tragic case. The investigation remains ongoing, with the two suspects expected to appear in court soon.

News24 reports that Piet Christian Bester was a giant of South African rugby in more ways than one. Renowned for his remarkable strength and scrummaging prowess, he left a lasting mark during the 1990s while representing Free State and Griquas in the Currie Cup. Despite starting his career as a tighthead prop weighing less than 80kg, his determination saw him bulk up to an imposing 95kg, earning his place as a cornerstone of the tight five.

In 1992, Bester’s talent earned him a spot in the Junior Springboks squad that squared off against the All Blacks, further cementing his legacy on the rugby field. His rugby pedigree ran in the family, with his brother, Andre, also donning the Free State and Griquas jerseys as a tenacious hooker. Together, the Bester brothers were a force to be reckoned with in South African rugby.

The brutal crime has sent shockwaves through the farming community, leaving many to grapple with the senseless violence that claimed such a life.
