The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez and Shōgun won big at the 82nd Golden Globes, heralding the unofficial kick-off to this year’s awards season.
Low-budget epic The Brutalist, a drama about a Holocaust survivor turned immigrant architect in the United States, received three prizes for best film: drama, actor for Adrien Brody, and director for actor-turned-filmmaker Brady Corbet.
Corbet also ended his address by paying respect to filmmaker Jeff Baena, who took his own life last week.
Brody, who had previously lost a Golden Globe for The Pianist before winning the Oscar, described the picture as “a story about the human capacity for creation”.
The Netflix crime musical Emilia Pérez was the most nominated film of the night, taking home four awards for best musical or comedy film, supporting female actor for Zoe Saldaña, original song, and best non-English film.
Saldaña bested her co-star Selena Gomez as well as Wicked’s Ariana Grande for her win.
The biggest surprise of the night was Brazilian star Fernanda Torres beating the likes of Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie and Kate Winsletin the female actor in a drama category with her performance in the fact-based 70s drama I’m Still Here.
Torres dedicated the award to her mother, the actor Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated at the Globes 25 years ago for her role in Central Station.
Another big moment came when Demi Moore finally won an acting award for her performance in the body-thriller film The Substance. Moore took the Best Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy award, saying “I really wasn’t expecting that!”
In her acceptance speech, Moore recalled her lack of confidence after being told she was just a “popcorn actress” rather than someone who would be taken seriously.
The historical epic Shōgun, however, swept the TV drama categories, winning best drama series, as well as marking historic victories for lead male actor Hiroyuki Sanada, lead female actor Anna Sawai, and supporting male actor Tadanobu Asano.
Shōgun‘s win follow a historic night at the Emmys, where the show won a record amount of accolades.
Controversial Netflix hit Baby Reindeer also picked up two awards for a limited series and Best Supporting Female Actor for Jessica Gunning, although creator and star, Richard Gadd, lost out to Colin Farrell who won Best Male Actor in a Limited Series for his role in the Batman spin-off series The Penguin.
The Latvian film Flow was the surprise winner of the animated film category, beating out Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot, the hit papal election thriller Conclave won for best screenplay while Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross picked up the original score award for Challengers.
Not quite reaching the eviscerating bar set by Ricky Gervais in previous awards, the show’s host, Nikki Glaser, at least managed to get a nomination for her stand-up special. Glaser is well known for her sharp tongue at comedy roasts, but the funny lady toned it down for the Globes, telling attendees “I am not here to roast you tonight.”
And then she pointed out the lack of elephants in the room by calling the event “Ozempic’s biggest night”.
Next up on the list of celebrity-fawning events are the Oscars, with nominations set to be announced on 17 January. Until then, check out the full list of Golden Globe winners here.
