Festive season shenanigans are in full swing, and Cape Town’s emergency lines are feeling the heat!

Over the weekend, calls shot up by a whopping 25%, with more than 2,000 incidents keeping responders on their toes.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith, dished the details via IOL, saying noise complaints and medical emergencies were the main culprits behind the surge.

Out of the chaos, 511 calls were for medical issues, 138 for assaults, 67 for domestic violence, and 81 for vehicle and pedestrian accidents.

Oh, and let’s not forget the 307 noise complaints—up from 215 the previous weekend. Clearly, Capetonians are already getting into the festive groove, loud and proud.

“It’s that time of year when parties and get-togethers are more frequent, and loud. While no one wants to be a Grinch or party pooper, I do encourage residents to party responsibly and consider those around them. Let your neighbours know if you’re having a party, and commit to turning the volume down at a pre-determined time, so that everyone is on the same page, and there is no unnecessary escalation of tensions or impact on neighbourly relations,” Smith said.

Cape Town’s festive season has traffic officers working overtime, too. Over the weekend, Traffic Services arrested 30 suspects, including 18 drivers for drunken driving, seven for reckless and negligent behaviour, and five for other misdeeds.

On top of that, they clocked a staggering 37,655 offences, impounded 209 public transport vehicles, and executed 1,126 warrants of arrest. Talk about a busy weekend on the roads—seems the silly season is in full throttle.

“Motorists are reminded to settle their fines and warrants or run the risk of spending time behind bars. Our current roadshow has seen more than a thousand motorists already handling their business. If you haven’t done so yet, get to the CBD by Wednesday, December 11, and get help with all of your fines and warrants in one place,” Smith said.

You can head to the concourse level at the Cape Town Civic Centre until Wednesday, December 11, 2024, to sort your fines out.

Meanwhile, Metro Police officers arrested 46 people for different crimes, confiscated illegal drugs, and issued 2,396 fines. Law Enforcement also arrested 133 suspects.

Yup, Dezember is here.
