With another 75 years still to go, Billboard has named Beyoncé the greatest pop star of the 21st century.
The publication made the announcement yesterday, saying that Queen Bey is “the century’s biggest pop star based on her full 25 years of influence, evolution and impact.”
In an Instagram post, Billboard hailed “Queen Bey” as the quintessential innovator in music with her one-of-a-kind style.
Fair enough, but with a new wave of young pop stars coming up and conspiracy theories around Beyoncé’s alleged ties to the Diddy scandal, this premature proclamation might not age well. Looney conspiracies and contenders to the pop throne aside though, Beyoncé is indeed a force of nature and deserves a place in the nomination list (to be finalised in 2099).
Billboard said “The reasons why Beyoncé captured the top spot on our list were beyond numerous. Ranging from her 25 years of timeless albums and singles to her incalculable industry impact and influence on other artists, to her peerless raw talents as a singer and performer”.
“Few artists this period can match her in any of the most critical basic categories of pop stardom. Commercial success, performance abilities, critical acclaim and accolades, industry influence, iconic cultural moments – and absolutely no one can equal her in all of them.”

Perhaps the key here is to note that the accolade comes from ‘Billboard’s staff list of the 25 Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century’. While we might be accused of being conspiracy theorists ourselves, we don’t trust the charts all that much these days. But that’s a discussion for another article.
Needless to say, Taylor Swift fans were none too pleased with the title going to Beyoncé and lamented their disgust with comments akin to the lyrics of one of Swift’s lukewarm songs.
“No, it’s TAYLOR SWIFT 🙌”
“The description and the numbers make it clear that Taylor Swift is the music industry and the greatest pop star alive!”
“Taylor Swift is the number 🥇 and the whole world knows!”
Tut-tut, we know it’s a little unnecessary to drag Taylor Swift into the discussion, but we’ve seen just one too many “What Swift and Travis Kelce Ate For Breakfast” articles and have grown rather weary of all the idolising. Call us contrarian and pitiful if you must – there’s always a Taylor Swift song that will make us feel better.
Cantankerous comments aside, Beyoncé (and Swift) are amazing artists and have managed to capture the world’s attention for years. If anyone is entitled to the throne, even just temporarily, Queen Bey probably deserves it.
While we wait to see what the next 75 years of pop music brings, you can read all about what Travis and Taylor wore to their super exciting double date night here.
