South Africa’s cocktail scene is on fire right now.
Fresh insights from CGA by NIQ’s On Premise User Survey (OPUS) reveal a surge in cocktail love across the country, as South African consumers raise their glasses to creative, trendsetting drinks.
All this unfolds as nearly nine out of ten South Africans (87%) continue to hit pubs, bars, and restaurants at least monthly—and almost half are making it a weekly ritual.
The survey reveals that 60% of cocktail enthusiasts are sipping their favourite mixes almost every time they go out, and 42% are ordering cocktails even more often than last year. This cocktail craze is a golden opportunity for both spirits suppliers and venues to shake things up.
“Cocktails have become a central part of the South African social landscape with our latest OPUS research revealing that almost half (47%) of regular venue-goers enjoy cocktails, and this figure is rising,” according to CGA by NIQ EMEA client solutions manager Abhi Sehgal.
The research also found that cocktail consumers are younger, tend to have higher incomes and enjoy going out more frequently than average. AKA, party people!
Popular choices among these patrons include classic cocktails like the Mojito, enjoyed by 38% of drinkers, followed by the Daiquiri Margarita, Pina Colada and Mimosa. However, tastes are evolving, with a growing interest in signature serves, modern cocktails, and classics with a twist.
The research also finds that people are quite interested in quality, with cocktail drinkers willing to spend an average of R116 per drink.
