Two Brazilian social media influencers drowned after reportedly refusing lifejackets on a speedboat to avoid tan lines that could ruin their selfies.
Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, passed away after the speedboat that was taking them ashore after a day of partying on a yacht, capsized in rough surf along an area known as Garganta do Diabo or Devil’s Throat.
The two influencers joined four others on the boat, reportedly refusing lifejackets for fear they would ruin their tan lines and photos. According to one of the five survivors, neither of the women knew how to swim.
The speedboat captain told police he was ordered to carry six passengers, though the boat had a five-person limit. The overloaded vessel struggled to navigate the rough waves, which eventually flooded the boat and sent the passengers overboard.
The pilot, who remains unidentified, told police he attempted to rescue everyone who fell overboard but was only able to retrieve some survivors.
Oddly enough, a Brazilian news source confirmed that the two women did not even know each other prior to the party.
Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim had posted photos on social media from the luxury yacht just moments before she drowned. Her body reportedly washed ashore at Itaquitanduva Beach a week later, while Faria’s body was recovered by Brazil’s Maritime Firefighters after it drifted out to sea.
