Following in the footsteps of Charlie Chaplin, who according to legend came in third at a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest, Timothy Chalamet gatecrashed a NYC lookalike contest this weekend – just as cops busted up the gathering.

The shaggy-haired Dune star, 28, stunned the crowd of of wanna-be-Timothys in Washingon Square Park when he popped up in the middle of one contestant posing for the cameras, before signing autographs for the squealing crowd.

The actor, who makes all husbands feel old, hit the streets just as a couple of NYPD cops tried to break up the crowd of several hundred people, saying it was an unlawful gathering without a permit.

At one point the NYPD cuffed a lookalike which prompted the crowd to chant “Let him go!” The cops, however, confirmed later that “One Willy Wonka lookalike was taken into custody.”

The contest, organised by YouTuber Anthony Po, promised a $50 prize for the winner and attracted thousands of RSVPs to an online invite. Asked what made a good Chalamet, one fan said, “It’s all in the nose. All of his bone structure really.” Right.

The top prize went to Miles Mitchell, a 21-year-old Staten Island resident and a student, who won a $250 trophy, and likely a few hearts.

After the audience dispersed, dozens of Chalamet-wannabes went to the neighbouring Mercer Playground, where more than a half-dozen of them began speed-dating rounds with female admirers. Now we get it. This was a ruse by Timothy Chalamet look-alikes to get Timothy Chalamet’s adoring fans in a group. Smart.

The Willy Wonka actor is indeed “absolutely gorgeous” – as the missus keeps reminding me – so we can understand the hoo-ha. I mean, just look at him.
