As strange as it may sound, Dunedin Airport in New Zealand has sparked a global discussion with its new notice enforcing a three-minute time restriction on goodbyes in its drop-off zone.

Adding “For fonder farewells, please use the car park”, Dunedin Airport CEO Daniel De Bono pointed to a study suggesting a 20-second hug is enough to get a burst of the “love hormone” oxytocin and argued that moving customers along quickly allows more people to get more hugs.

A Facebook post with the notice went viral, sparking outrage over the cuddles curfew, while others simply marvelled that the airport still has a free drop-off area at all, given the general rise in fees and fines.

The Kiwis are not the only ones putting a cap on kisses, as one commenter pointed out, even Denmark urges their visitors to keep it short.

De Bono described airports as “hotbeds of emotion”, saying that Dunedin Airport’s parking lot “has seen interesting things go on … over the years.”

The airport parking lot still allows a 15-minute visit for free, and as we all know, 15 minutes is enough…
