Moments before her tragic death, Rebekah Morris sent her mother a picture of cows in a field, captioned simply “cowz,” an inquest has revealed.
The 29-year-old had been walking her dog in fields near Riverside Way, Littlethorpe, Leicestershire, on the evening of July 9, 2022, when she was fatally trampled.
As a jury inquest at Leicester Town Hall heard, her family, growing anxious after receiving no responses to their messages, rushed to the area only to find her gravely injured. Despite efforts from farmer Guy Hutton and other locals who performed CPR before emergency services arrived, Rebekah—affectionately known as Becki—was pronounced dead at the scene.
Forensic pathologist Michael Biggs testified that Becki had “hoofprints” on her chest and shoulder, with a liver injury leading to fatal internal bleeding.
A paramedic who attended the scene revealed that the initial emergency calls suggested the woman had been attacked or strangled. However, Dr Michael Biggs’s post-mortem examination found no evidence of foul play or involvement from another person, confirming that the trampling solely caused the tragedy.
He said: “The nature of the injuries and the severity of them are too excessive to have been caused by another person, they are consistent with a large heavy creature such as a cow.”
He added the number of injuries was “not so large” that he believed the whole herd had been involved, and instead thought it was a “relatively brief incident involving one cow”.
Toxicology reports revealed that Ms Morris had a “social level” of alcohol in her system, along with her prescribed medication. However, Dr Biggs stated that the effects of these substances would have been “mild” and unlikely to have played a significant role in her tragic demise.
Ms Morris was with her dog, a chihuahua called Zero, for a walk on the night she died.
Ms Morris’s father said his daughter was “the sort of person that lit up the room when she walked into it”.
He said: “She was a wonderful, lovely girl. She was kind, had compassion, and always had a listening ear for anyone.”
The inquest is still ongoing.
