A grim discovery was made at Glencairn Beach, near Simon’s Town, on Wednesday, October 9.
Simon’s Town police responded to a complaint and found ‘bones scattered on the rocks’ upon their arrival at Whale Watchers Beach.
According to reports, a community member was walking with their dog around 6 PM when they noticed what resembled remains of human bones, according to Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, SAPS spokesperson.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said the bones were scattered around a burnt-out wheelie bin as if the body was burned in another location, and a shovel was found nearby.
‘The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation,’ said Swartbooi.
‘We appeal to anyone with information to please call Crime Stop on 08600 10111,’ Swartbooi added.
Simon’s Town SAPS has registered an inquest for further investigation. It is understood that an autopsy will need to be completed before police can determine if, or what, foul play was involved.
Simon’s Town Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Andrew Rogers has described the incident as a “cruel act”, News24 reports.
“We condemn the dumping of anybody or human remains in the strongest possible manner. There were only partial remains. The body seems to have possibly been burned somewhere else, and the remaining bones dumped on the rocks,” Rogers said.
He alleges that the body could be that of a female “judging by the bone structure”, but said that the police would be best placed to answer.
The False Bay Echo also reported that on Monday, October 7, the body of an unknown woman was found at Surfer’s Corner on Muizenberg Beach.
Muizenberg police spokesman Captain Stephen Knapp said the woman is approximately 40 years old and was dressed in a grey T-shirt and short Hemisphere tights with no shoes. Knapp said the woman was reportedly seen with three other people earlier in the day and is believed to be from Hanover Park.
An inquest docket has been opened.
