One of the biggest stars in country music of the 1990s, Garth Brooks, has been accused of rape by a former hair and make-up artist in a lawsuit.
His accuser, who goes by Jane Roe in the complaint, says the attack happened when she was travelling with the singer from Nashville to Los Angeles for the 2019 Grammy Awards.
The case, which was submitted on Thursday to the Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that although Brooks usually travels in groups, the two of them took his private plane to the event alone and that he reserved a single hotel suite for the two of them.
The woman claims that once in the suite, he appeared naked in the doorway to the bedroom and then raped her.
Representatives for Brooks have so far refused to comment but the suit goes on to say Brooks proceeded as though nothing had happened and expected her to do his hair and make-up immediately after.
Additionally, the lady claims that earlier in the same year, while she was at Brooks’ house, he made an appearance in his underwear, took her hands, and forced her to touch his genitals. The lawsuit by Jane Roe also claims that on top of the two described incidents, Brooks exposed himself to her on many other occasions, talked about sexual fantasies with her and sent her explicit text messages.
The unnamed claimant is believed to have also worked for Brooks’ wife, fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, since 1999.
Preempting the accusations, Brooks filed a separate complaint in federal court in Mississippi last month, with both of the parties remaining nameless. The plaintiff in that lawsuit, identified as John Doe, said in court documents that the claims were “wholly untrue” and that he first became aware of them in July when she threatened to sue him in public unless he handed her millions of dollars.
The woman’s “intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, and false light invasion of privacy” is what he requested the judge to put an end to.
With classics like “The Thunder Rolls” and “Friends in Low Places,” Brooks, 62, was the biggest singer in country music during the 1990s.
According to his official website, he is still the best-selling solo artist in US history, with 20 Billboard no. 1 singles and 157 million album sales. He concluded his tenure at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum in March of this year.
