Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the new Minecraft movie starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and most are immediately baffled if not horrified.
Straight away, Forbes reports that the minute-long spot for the adaptation of one of the most popular games ever made is “utterly horrifying in almost every conceivable way”, while Esquire asks “What horrific chain of events placed this image on my screen today?” – referring to Momoa in a cheap wig and a pink leather jacket as if he were “vomited out of a deleted scene from Barbie“.
In the film’s first trailer, the actor once hailed as Aquaman finds himself amidst a whirlwind of absurdity; a disturbingly rectangular sheep, a downright disgraceful use of the Beatles’ ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, and a masterclass in green-screen acting at its most cringe-worthy.
“I definitely assumed that when they made a Minecraft movie it would be in a similar medium to the game. Instead, everything is just weird looking non-game CGI cubes and it’s not just actors voicing Minecraft-shaped characters, it’s just…people,” notes Forbes.
Momoa’s character is seemingly sucked into the world of Minecraft with Emma Myers (Wednesday), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy), and Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple).
Jack Black shows up with no shave or haircut just looking like…Jack Black. But he’s Steve. Warner Bros. probably had to cough up a nice chunk of cash to get an obligatory Jack Black appearance in 2024 – but was it worth it?
Trailer time:
The main qualm is that Minecraft as a game is a haven of creativity, so using the old Whoops, I got trapped in the game! plot is tired and boring now and might not do the game adaptation justice.
As Jack Black says in the trailer, “Anything you can dream about in this world, you can make.” I’ve seen Minecraft players use their imaginations to build entire cities, realistic maps, and even a functioning computer. But in A Minecraft Movie, the characters will apparently try using their imaginations to find a way out of that magical world? Why?!? Remember the Super Mario Bros. Movie that didn’t feature a single human being and grossed more than a billion dollars? Zero lessons learned.
Ultimately, they should have made a Minecraft movie in Minecraft, or at least something that looks a lot more like Minecraft than this.
A Minecraft Movie premieres in theatres on April 4, 2025.
