The latest cinematic offering from Netflix, The Deliverance, is being trolled by viewers online, with most of the confused noise being directed at Hollywood icon Glenn Close, who has some truly weird scenes in the film.
Decrying the ludicrous dialogue, and wigs, people are genuinely asking how director Lee Daniels was able to convince the legendary actress to go along with it.
How bad can it be, you may ask? Well, to start with, people are spitting out their slushies over a scene where Close (nominated for eight Academy Awards and winner of three Primetime Emmy Awards, three Tony Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and three Grammies) with a bald cap and spiky teeth, utters the words: “I can smell your nappy p—y!”.
Flabbergasted folks started sharing clips of the film, causing it to rocket right to the top of the streamers’ most-viewed charts. Most people are roasting it, relishing its ‘unabashed outrageousness’. Others, however, are just trying to make sense of what in God’s name they just saw.
Described as a “Satanic possession thriller”, it portrays a single mother of three, Ebony (Andra Day) relocating to Indiana with her cancer-stricken mother, Alberta (Close). Anthony B. Jenkins plays Dre, Ebony’s youngest kid, who gets fixated on an unseen figure he refers to as “Tre”, and who he claims to have seen in the bedroom closet and basement. Dre begins acting weird and has psychotic episodes with his brothers.
A mysterious woman (Aunjaue Ellis-Taylor) begins following them, eventually revealing herself to be a reverend. She informs them of a tragic event in the house 20 years prior, and that they are now all ‘possessed’. What follows is a mashup of The Exorcist and That Scary Movie.

I never thought in all my days that I would see THEE Glenn Close doing a sew in with French manicure tips, chewing gum like a cow, with a cajun accent and doing the “girl straighten yo head up” move pic.twitter.com/EcD05fPLUz

Close told People that she had no idea how to portray “a white woman who lived her life in a black community.”
“Alberta is a white woman who has lived her life in the Black community and she’s only dated Black men.”
“I was intrigued and I wanted to do her justice. And so the journey began.”
Besides the racial confusion, the dialogue is hilarious in some parts, and although there are uncomfortable chuckles to be had, Close’s wig and wardrobe have earned the lion’s share of attention – particularly when it’s revealed that the wild look was entirely a creative choice by the director.
Close’s portrayal is loosely based on the real-life Latoya Ammons, a black woman, as one fan pointed out. The Ammons haunting case, often referred to as the ‘Demon House’ or the ‘200 Demons House’, is a claimed demonic possession and haunting that took place in Gary, Indiana in 2011. Latoya Ammons, Rosa Campbell, her mother, and her three kids all reported seeing paranormal activity in the house.
However, both their landlord and psychologists who interviewed the kids claimed it was a hoax, with the former claiming the hauntings started when Ammons fell “behind on lease and used the claimed paranormal activities to avoid payments”, while the latter reported, “the children were acting deceptively and in accordance with their mother’s beliefs”.
None of the future tenants reported any paranormal activity, and in 2016 the house was demolished.
For his part, Daniels seems to be delighting in all the chatter. To the viral post of Close’s infamous line captioned “Lee Daniels, you will pay for your crimes,” he cheekily responded: “Had to do it.” Well, you did it.
