Everyone on social media who has seen it has done a double take at this one-car garage in Cape Town’s affluent suburb of Bantry Bay selling for a ludicrously high price.
We know the property prices in the Mother City are sky-high right now, but this simple garage price is astronomical.
Pam Golding has priced the eight-square metre property listing – essentially the size of a single parking space – at R2,2 million.
The agents say the minuscule space is “secure and sought after” and also comes with a R473 monthly levy.
The South African noted all the head-whipping and jaw-dropping from locals who cannot believe what R2 mil gets you these days.

At least okes are funny about it:
@MasonwabeWeber: “Guaranteed someone is going to buy it, slap a bed and bucket in there and call it a “rustic Campsbay” stay on Airbnb.”
@KoketsoResane: “That Ferrari has to park somewhere.”
@DeanKietzmann: “What’s the view of the beach like?”
@L_N_E_N_E: “Cape Town’s real estate market is an April Fool’s joke that refuses to end.”
This humble garage then spurned a deep dive into the other ridiculous property listings all over Cape Town right now.
One example was a 90-square-metre bachelor apartment in Woodstock, Cape Town, listed for nearly R1 million. The owner made the most of the space by using a bookshelf as stairs to reach the bed, which is set above the living and dining areas.

There’s also this ‘gem’.
I’m not sure if they’re saying fuck locals or if they’re really just messing with us 😭 https://t.co/Phpplm58WU pic.twitter.com/JVXzydPoyq

@naledi_art says “33k and sharing in one sentence??”, and @Simz_Ntlemeza laments how “We’re being priced out, it’s so bad”, while @uMajozi_ hit the nail on the head by saying “It makes sense for them in dollars/euros that’s the market they operate, they just denominate the amounts in rands for us to comprehend.”
“Cape Town exists to serve Europeans, American and the rich elite.”
These Cape Town locations – Sea Point, Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, and Green Point – being right next to beaches, business districts, nightlife, and mountain views, have always been highly sought after. But with international tourists, digital nomads and HNWIs moving in, locals are feeling the panic over being increasingly priced out.
