Immortalised by crime writer Agatha Christie and her moustached detective, Hercule Poirot, the Orient Express is legendary for its glamour and mystery, and now the famous train is about to undergo a luxurious reboot.
Although well-known thanks to the Christie book and movie, The Orient Express has in fact never been a specific train, but a scheduled service that has operated the Paris to Istanbul route for the last 140 years.
Since starting in 1883, several operators have used the name (and still do) for rides crisscrossing Europe. But if the journey has always been on your bucket list, it might be worth waiting a little while longer.
Operated by the Orient Express brand, part of the Accor Hospitality Group, a stunning remake of the original trains is planned for launch in 2026.
Redesigned by renowned French architect Maxime d’Angeac, the 17 carriages dating back to the 1920s and 1930s will “capture the first golden age of rail travel in all its splendour”.

D’Angeac’s interiors are full of surprises and literary inspirations. His personal library includes Ernest Hemingway’s books, biographies of art collector Peggy Guggenheim, and (most importantly), a collection of Agatha Christie novels.
So whatever your berth on the Orient Express, you’ll become “acquainted with places of travel, encounters, and surprises with a theatrical decor”. In other words, d’Angeac seems to be the perfect person to design the next whimsical tribute to this legendary train.
For this mythical train whose name raises only dreams and fantasies, it was not a question of copying and pasting the original Orient-Express, but rather to recreate the atmosphere of an exceptional train that would convey the same spirit, in a 21st century version.

Originally intended to hit the tracks in 2025, the Orient Express train by Maxime d’Angeac is now anticipated to launch in late 2026.
The finer details of the journey – including where it will go exactly, and at what price – are still to be unveiled.
Meanwhile, the brand’s Orient Express La Dolce Vita is available to book online, with journeys from April 2025 taking travellers to Italy’s greatest destinations.
