Grab your pitchforks and light those torches people, the anti-Blake posse is on the move.
Now that Taylor Swift has found her halo knocked askew by claims that she is chart-blocking other artists, her bestie Blake Lively is in for some scrutiny and outrage from the morality police. It’s tough being an American sweetheart.
The 36-year-old has been dragged into controversy following her seemingly ‘tone-deaf’ attitude while promoting her new flick, It Ends With Us.
Lively is being bashed online for her lighthearted approach to promoting a film that deals with serious issues like domestic violence, which to the online community is in stark contrast to the serious and thoughtful attitude of her co-star, Justin Baldoni.
The film – adapted from the book of the same name by Colleen Hoover – tells the story of Lily Bloom (played by Lively), a florist who experiences domestic abuse by her partner, Ryle Kincaid (played by Justin Baldoni). Lively also produced the film, and Baldoni directed it.
To make matters worse, Lively has been using the press around the film to launch her new beverage line, Betty Buzz, and hair line, Blake Brown. Encouraging fans to “grab your friends” and “wear your florals” to the movie theatre, Lively has unleashed a wave of condemnation which reached ‘peak outrage’ when she recently explained how to make It Ends With Us-inspired cocktails using Lively’s and Reynolds’ products.

As if that wasn’t enough to melt Icarus’ wings, journalist Kjersti Flaa released a clip from her 2016 interview with Lively, which she titled: “The Blake Lively interview that made me want to quit my job.”
Flaa kicked off the interview by congratulating Lively, who was pregnant at the time. “Congrats on your little bump,” Flaa said, to which Lively responded, “Congratulations on your little bump.”
Flaa now claims that Lively’s comment “was like a bullet,” as she was struggling with infertility.
“Her comment left me almost paralyzed. To be honest it hurts because I obviously wasn’t pregnant and I could never get pregnant so to me that comment was like a bullet.”
Guns loaded with outrage, social media is now firing outraged bullets of their own downrange.
“Blake Lively’s Acting Career Ends With Us.”
“Love you Blake but you are definitely tone deaf. The promotion on this film is a complete slap in the face to every woman who has endured domestic violence.”
No backlash is complete without a TikTok, and one user pointed to her ‘sarcastic’ attitude during interviews for the movie, with some acidic editing to get the point across that Blake doesn’t care about ‘ordinary people’.

Blake Lively seems to be channelling a little too much of her husband’s sarcastic/comedic attitude in the last few weeks. Snappy comebacks and tongue-in-cheek self-promotion work well with action movies, but when the subject matter of your film is a societal problem like GBV, fun recipes for cocktails and giggling with your co-stars are guaranteed to draw the mob to your doorstep.

Lively has not responded to the outrage yet, but she did share a National Domestic Violence Hotline resource on her Instagram story.
“1 in 4 women aged 18 and older in the US alone have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Intimate partner violence affects all genders, including more than 12 million people every year in the United States. Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence.”
Desislava Dobreva, a branding strategist, told Business Insider that she suspected Lively’s team “is currently analyzing the situation and will likely advise silence — the strategy most Hollywood stars adopt when they believe they won’t be affected long term.”
Probably good advice for Lively at this stage.
