The Rouge Revue will host its annual burlesque benefit, The Grand Exhibition (TGE), at the Star Theatre at the District Six Homecoming Centre on Saturday, August 24.
The Rouge Revue hosted its first TGE in Cape Town in 2015 and raised R215,000 for its chosen charity, Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust.
This year’s event, themed Where Beauty Meets Benevolence, will once again see the burlesque community unite for a great cause.
Paying homage to the traditions of classic burlesque while infusing it with a ‘contemporary twist’, The Rouge Review has been at the forefront of burlesque in Cape Town for decades and features performers from diverse backgrounds, body types, races, ages and orientations.
The Rouge Revue Burlesque Company was established in 2010 by Headmistress, Lady Magnolia and builds on the Victorian tradition of using caricature, parody and travesty in a variety show format. Burlesque has always been known for challenging unrealistic beauty standards and empowering women by showcasing performers of all shapes, sizes, and abilities.
The ‘naughty’ nature of burlesque has always been very effectively paired with comedy (after all, sexy shouldn’t always be serious), and by embracing all body types, audiences get to appreciate the diversity and inherent beauty in everybody.
If you’ve never seen a burlesque show, it’s highly recommended to attend The Grand Exhibition.
