Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have wasted millions of dollars and tons of time trying to sort out their past obsession with ‘what if?’.

A source has said that their recent relationship sting has basically been “the most expensive exercise in closure”, all because they couldn’t stop wondering about the “unfinished business” of their past.

After their first engagement crumbled in 2004, the question ‘what if?’ lingered like a shadow in their hearts. That lingering doubt then culminated in a rekindling and then a wedding nearly two decades later. In 2022, their love story came full circle with a spectacular three-day celebration at Affleck’s $8 million estate in Georgia. The event was nothing short of a fairy tale, with Lopez dazzling in not one, but three stunning gowns by Ralph Lauren.

“They got caught up in the moment. Jennifer had wanted this wedding — the gowns, the friends, all the trappings and trimmings — for decades,” a friend told Page Six.

But now the couple are expected to announce their marriage is officially over by the end of the season.

After getting caught up in nostalgia and their lost dream of two decades ago, the source says “They’ve turned the page on all the unfinished business of 20 plus years ago. They’ve seen things through to the end — and they know for sure now that they are not built for the long haul,” the friend said.

“No further unanswered questions. They’ve seen all they need to see, and it’s over.”

“In the end, it’s gonna be the most elaborate and expensive exercise in closure ever.”

Per another source, Affleck apparently said in May that “If there was a way to divorce on grounds of temporary insanity, he would.”

“He feels like the last two years was just a fever dream …”

Lopez’s newest album, This Is Me…Now, and the accompanying Amazon Prime documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, co-starring Affleck, was inspired by their relationship – and if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ll understand the fever dream part much more.

Apparently, Affleck has been holding off on officially filing for divorce to spare J-Lo more embarrassment, which a source says has made her “furious” and “humiliated”.

“She’s furious,” says the source. “He has humiliated her. He was the one who initiated getting back together.”

Well, the couple have already listed their $68 million Beverly Hills house for sale, and Affleck has already bought a $20 million home in Brentwood, close to his three children and his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

Lopez, meanwhile, has been touring homes since returning to Los Angeles spending the past month in the Hamptons – where she was spotted licking ice cream in a cute outfit, which acquaintances say was an elaborate paparazzi set up because she’s “addicted to attention”.

“Ben’s found his new home, and Jen’s about to select hers. It’s absolutely done and there is zero interest, inclination or reason to turn back,” said the friend.
