In a stunning turn of events, Zimbabwean cattle rancher Collen Tafireyi has shattered auction records in South Africa by purchasing a prized Boran Stud bull for an astounding R8 million.
This remarkable feat has sent shockwaves through the agricultural community, marking a historic moment in livestock trading.
The groundbreaking sale kicked off on Saturday at the Hurwitz Farming Production Auction held at the Bull Ring Auction House in Davel, Mpumalanga, per iHarare. Tafireyi (a Boran breeder from Sinyo Boran Stud in Hwedza, Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe) went head-to-head with his friend and neighbour, Rogers Sithole of Black Ox Farming, in the intense bidding war and emerged the winner with one giant hunk of meat and lighter pockets.
A Boran cattle breeder specialises in the breeding, raising, and managing of Boran cattle, a breed known for its resilience and superior qualities in beef production. Look at this prized bull called Cyclone that cost Tafireyi an arm and a leg:

This record-setting acquisition marks a significant milestone for Tafireyi, who is only three years into the specialized cattle breeding business, per Zimeye:
“This is not about the price; it’s about getting what I want,” said Tafireyi. “I’m building the biggest and best brands in Africa. Cyclone really caught my eye six months ago, and when he became available, I was determined to get him at any cost.”
The Hurwitz Farming auction, a prominent event in the industry attracting Boran enthusiasts and buyers from far and wide, is one of South Africa’s pioneers in the Boran breed with nearly 30 years of experience.
The Boran herd was originally established in 1993 with embryos from the scarce Mafundzalo herd in Zambia and has since grown into one of the largest registered Boran herds in the world.

During the auction, Tafireyi’s determination was evident.
“I spoke with Rogers last night about the investment,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a tough battle, but I was prepared.”
Rogers, who also made significant purchases at the auction, acknowledged the quality of the cattle on offer.
“The quality of the cattle today was amazing. Collins bought an incredible bull, one of the most perfectly bred I’ve ever seen. We continue to invest in good genetics to improve our stock.”
The auction highlighted the importance of investing in top-quality genetics for the improvement of cattle breeds. Tafireyi explained that his purchase is expected to have a significant impact on the cattle breeding industry in Zimbabwe, with the goal of elevating breeding standards and transforming the industry into one of the best on the continent through investments in top genetics and knowledge sharing.
“It’s not just about the money; it’s about the potential for the future,” said Sithole. “We are excited about the possibilities this brings to our breeding programs.”
“The bar has been set very high,” concluded Sithole.
