Big? Small? Slim? Apple has never quite figured out what to do with its fourth iPhone model.
First, it was the Mini, then the Plus, and now the incredible shapeshifting non-Pro iPhone is about to evolve yet again: into the Slim.
There have been quite rumblings about an iPhone Slim model taking the place of the iPhone Plus in 2025, making it the iPhone 17 Slim. Then, a new report from Apple supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo corroborated the earlier claims to suggest that indeed, more shapeshifting is on the horizon.
Kuo agrees that the new shape will come with a 6.6-inch screen and just one rear-facing camera along with the company’s beleaguered in-house 5G chip. Although, she says the Slim model won’t be a direct replacement for the Plus.
Instead, it represents “new design trends beyond the existing iPhone lineup.”
This aligns with the fact that it might cost more than the R21,500 Pro Max.
The plan now seems to ax the Plus entirely as Kuo points out, it “only accounts for 5-10 per cent of new iPhone shipments,” and Apple has deemed it redundant to the other high-end models it sells.
Starting next year (potentially), the Plus is out, and Slim is in.
Apple would love for us all to upgrade our iPhones more frequently, so it spins the ‘Price is Right’ wheel, trying to find the perfect blend of size and features to reignite the almighty upgrade cycle.
If it wasn’t a small phone or a big phone, and if AI doesn’t do it, then maybe Skinny Phone will. Who knows, maybe this is a stepping stone toward an actual folding iPhone, which is coincidentally also back in the rumour mill.
Lucky for South Africans, an upgrade doesn’t have to be that pricey. That’s because Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer, offers a trade-in option.
This trade-in option helps you knock down the price you pay, with a number of different financing options available to make your next baby all that more affordable. Trade in an old Mac – or up to five other Apple, Android, or Windows devices – against a new Apple device, and you can finance the difference.
It couldn’t be easier – simply use the table on the website to get an estimate of your device’s value, or to get a more accurate quote fill in the form over here and Digicape will get in touch.
Trade-in and slim down? Your pocket will be grateful either way.
