Even though creating a definitive list of the most beautiful cities in the world is a downright impossible task, Architectural Digest listed Cape Town as one of the 20 most beautiful cities in the world.
AD notes that 20 cities are far too few to sum up all the world’s beauty, adding that their list is not definitive as such, but they’ve still attempted to highlight some “supremely spectacular places”, with the Mother City being one of them.
In asking what makes a city beautiful, the renowned publication has aimed to consider architecture, cultural treasures, historical relevance, as well as natural appeal in compiling the list.
“The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else. Destinations from all over the globe made the list, some for possessing all of the above in a single place.”
Cheers to Cape Town at number 14!
AD recognises: “Brilliant blue waters, buzzing nightlife, an ever-emerging arts scene, and the majestic Table Mountain make Cape Town a stunning city no matter your definition of beauty. For both nature lovers and thrill seekers, getting a closer look at the city’s main mountain never disappoints. Table Mountain National Park has a cable car that offers panoramic views of the city, plus whale-watching from Cape Point and the chance to peep penguins at Boulders Beach.”
The crowning glory on AD’s list appears to be the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, where you can find surf, sand dunes, and Art Deco architecture.
In second place is Tallinn in Estonia, which makes one feel as though they’ve been transported back to 13th-century Europe. And third, it seems Portsmouth in Dominica gets a nice nod, largely because this “Caribbean island city is significantly less known than just about any other locale on this list”.
San Miguel de Allende in Mexico also gets a nod, along with Antigua in Guatemala, Singapore, Paris, Chefchaouen in Morocco, Chiang Mai in Thailand, Luxor in Egypt, Istanbul in Turkey, Kyoto in Japan, Barcelona in Spain, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Florence in Italy, Djenné in Mali, New York City, Amsterdam in Netherlands, and lastly, Jaipur in India.
