Kevin Costner is reportedly devastated after turning his back on a starring role in the critically acclaimed Yellowstone series to focus on his ‘passion project’ – only for Horizon: An American Saga to flop at the box office, and be panned by critics. Ouch.
To add further injury to the veteran actor’s ego, Costner allegedly invested about $38 million of his own money into American Saga, which he planned on being the first of a trilogy.
You have to sympathise with Costner for spending five years as the lead on the other acclaimed cowboy show, only for his cowboy movie to be found wanting, and taking a massive chunk of his pension.
An insider report brought to light by Life & Style magazine has revealed that Costner is in a pretty tight spot thanks to his investment in Horizon: An American Saga. A lot was riding on the film, given that there was so much of his own money invested into the projects, which failed to be recovered by the domestic box office.
He really believed in these movies, still does, and is taking the news pretty hard.
To make matters worse, New Line has reportedly decided to delay the second instalment of An America Saga to ‘allow people more time to discover the first one’.
Costner was allegedly seething after Steve Carell’s Despicable Me 4 outperformed his cowboy saga at the box office, despite the two films having had the same budget. The disappointing start fell short of the initial $12 million estimate for the $100 million production.
Costner, however, seems to be dealing with disappointment by diving back into work and has reportedly been pushing for a fourth instalment of An American Saga. Doubling down on the disappointment comes to mind, but then again, this is the guy who saved Whitney’s life and grew webs between his toes to take down a pirate Dennis Hopper.
Critics are doubtful, especially after reviews for the first film including mortal wounds such as:
“The biggest hurdle is the writing and editing. Good moments mingle with terrible moments, but too many moments are blah, unmemorable filler. The film is haphazardly cut, resulting in awkward pacing; characters disappear for what feels like hours at a time.”
To illustrate how poorly the movie was reviewed, Decider even proclaimed Luke Wilson to be “the best thing about Horizon: An American Saga.” Luke Wilson people.
Perhaps the second one will be better, so it may be worth waiting for the follow-up to see the light of day before getting stuck into another Western drama. If you’ve missed the hullabaloo around American Saga, check out the trailer below and then decide.
