Apple’s WWDC 2024 was packed with announcements about iOS 18, its upcoming version of the iPhone operating system, which introduces a host of new features.

Slowly but surely, Apple has started getting iPhone users ready for its latest mobile operating system, and it is important to note that there will be some iPhones that won’t be able to handle it. Don’t worry, though, if that is the case, we have a plan.

The upcoming iteration is notable for a few reasons, the most significant being Apple Intelligence, although this on-device embedded AI experience will likely work best on the latest iteration of the iPhone. Namely, the iPhone 15 Pro models as they sport the A17 Pro chipset, which powers the computer behind many of the features that Apple Intelligence is touting.

Among some other cool new features to be introduced with the update are a set of customisation options, such as being able to arrange apps and widgets on the Home Screen and customise buttons. Other features include new text effects, the ability to lock and hide apps, new ways to manage your Mail inbox, the introduction of iMessage over satellite, a significant redesign of the Photos app and more, per TechCrunch.

A public beta release of iOS 18 is out next month, but some elements are already available to test right now in a separate public beta.

Apple has also confirmed that iOS 18 will roll out to iPhone users in ‘fall’ (for the Northern Hemisphere). While a specific date has not been disclosed at the time of writing, this will more than likely happen in September, as this has been the release schedule that Apple has followed for years now.

It is also worth pointing out that all features, outside of Apple Intelligence, will not be available in all regions at launch, per HyperText:

To that end, Apple noted that that the Safari Highlights feature, which automatically detects relevant information, will only be available in English in the United States at launch. Furthermore the live audio transcription capability being added to the Notes app will only be accessible on iPhone 12 devices or newer, supporting English only in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the US.

As we await the fully-fledged release of the operating system, at least we know which devices will be able to support iOS 18 so that we can make a plan if our device does not.
