In a move that has made quite the royal splash, King Charles has reportedly acquired a lavish condo unit at 111 W. 57th St, situated on Manhattan’s famed Billionaires’ Row in the New York City area.
City finance records filed this week reveal that this transaction, for a unit within the development’s historic Steinway Hall, represents the final sale of the landmarked building.
The buyer is listed on the deed as “His Majesty the King in Right of Canada, Represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs,” and has secured unit 11A – a three-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom residence on the 11th floor – for $6.63 million. For us Saffas, that’s over R120 million. And we thought Cape Town property prices were high!
The iconic property deal, which closed in June according to the city register, adds a touch of regal splendour to the luxury condo market. However, the ultimate resident of the 3,601-square-foot apartment, which boasts city views and access to opulent amenities including a swimming pool and sauna, remains shrouded in mystery. Questions abound – why is Canada mentioned on the deed? Why is King Charles being so secretive about it? Who on earth will be using all that extra space in the condo?
Well, some answers are beginning to trickle in thanks to the city’s confirmation of the listing purchase. The deed’s reference to Canada suggests the purchase may be for the Commonwealth nation, though it still does not answer questions about whether the property will serve as a residence for the King himself. Buckingham Palace has yet to respond to requests for comment and clarification.
Robert McCubbing, senior trade commissioner and director of trade and investment at the Canadian consulate in New York, signed the deed on behalf of King Charles, according to the city’s records. The Post has also reached out to McCubbing for comment, but (for now) it seems that “mum’s the word” when it comes to the extravagant investment.
The one thing we do know for certain is that the King’s new pad is lekker larney.
Entering unit 11A, residents are greeted by an elegant foyer featuring stone floors and a powder room off to the side. The foyer opens into a spacious living room adjacent to a dining room – perhaps perfect for hosting royal gatherings.
The separate kitchen is a chef’s dream, complete with a wet bar, Cristallo Gold quartzite countertops, custom hand-crafted cabinetry, and a full suite of Gaggenau appliances.
Adjacent to the foyer, a study includes an ensuite bathroom, and the primary corner bedroom boasts an expansive walk-in closet and a windowed bathroom clad in Italian white Venato marble, featuring a free-standing copper soaking tub and custom bronze fixtures. The two additional bedrooms each come with their own ensuite bathrooms, ensuring privacy and luxury for all residents, whoever these mysterious residents and/or guests may be.
And it’s not just the condo itself that exudes luxury and class – the building, on the whole, offers a range of high-end amenities, including an 82-foot two-lane swimming pool with private cabanas, a separate sauna and treatment rooms, a double-height fitness centre with a mezzanine terrace, a private dining room and chef’s catering kitchen, and a residents’ lounge with an expansive terrace. A laundry list of items that seem unrealistic for regular folks as they are titillating and enchanting.
Developers Kevin Maloney and Michael Stern facilitated the deal on behalf of the seller, successfully completing the sale of the final unit in Steinway Hall, within the Billionaires’ Row complex, which includes 60 residences, offering stunning Central Park views.
As King Charles adds his name to the list of illustrious owners, this residence on Billionaires’ Row cements its status as one of the most coveted addresses in the world.
Perhaps this is the King’s way of ‘retiring’ in style – who wouldn’t want to grow old watching the iconic glittering Manhattan skyline?
