As the story goes, in 1893, New Cape Central Railway proudly continued the work of Cape Central Railways to complete the construction of the railway from Worcester to Voor Bay, Mossel Bay. On 25th July 1907, Mossel Bay was reached despite destruction from war, floods and other transportation challenges.
Then, 127 years after the NCCR was formed, in 2020, Derick du Toit reignited its legacy along the Breede River Valley to Mossel Bay.
“Creating opportunities and cultivating potential in the region motivates NCCR to maintain momentum under extreme pressure; pressure and heat used to power a train that changed the trajectory of business in the region,” the NCCR website notes.
“At NCCR we believe that the potential and vast beauty of the region remains untapped, and we proudly bring trains, people and the beauty of this area together.”
Wine is available to purchase onboard from local producers, Robertson Winery, Bonnievale Wines and guest wineries hosted by La Verne Wine Boutique, all at cellar prices. An onboard deli serving light meals by Spasie Trein Kombuis is available for purchase.
All adults will receive an R40 discount voucher towards their purchase on the train, and apparently, there is a free wine tasting on board as well.
The train departs at Robertson Station every Saturday at 11h00 and runs for between 3 and 3.5 hours at a cost of R550 for adults, and R300 for children in the age range of 3-12 (under three rides for free).
