The Western Cape Winter has finally released its crisp breath, which means hidden treasures are awakening beneath the soil.
Although there are hundreds of species of truffles, only a few are choice edibles. The Black Winter Truffle is one such delicious option, and right now, they’re thriving at our favourite wine farm in the Franschhoek Winelands.
Ready for you to taste and enjoy, truffle season is in full fancy over at Anthony Rupert Wyne.
Often referred to as “black gold”, the culinary delicacy has captivated the world, in part because of its fetching price and scarcity but also largely because of the unmistakable dimension it adds to a dining experience, notes Wine.co.za.
Black Winter Truffles are characterised by their dark, robustly-veined flesh that appears almost black-purple, and has the strongest flavour and aroma of all the black truffles, with notes of cocoa, earth, and tannins to tantalise the senses.
Anthonij Rupert Wyne proudly stands as the first wine estate in South Africa to cultivate and produce black Périgord truffles. These exceptional quality truffles are nurtured at their Altima Estate, benefiting from the region’s ideal cool climate conditions for cultivating these rare delicacies.
In September 2010, oak tree roots were inoculated with truffle spores to initiate growth and so, as soon as the Winter winds blow in, the hunt is on.
