Guinness World Record holder and endurance swimmer Howard Warrington finished his 200th swim from Robben Island to Blouberg on Sunday, setting a new world record.
The 59-year-old machine of a man previously held the world record for completing 150 swims of this 7.5-kilometre distance while also having crossed the English Channel, conquered eight Ironman Triathlons, ran six Comrades Marathons, participated in 26 Cape Town Cycle Tours, and completed an impressive tally of 64 marathons and 243 half marathons.
Braving the bone-chilling waters, battling unpredictable currents, and enduring relentless waves, the Somerset Westian embarked on this daring mission to save animal lives, all in the name of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Animal Hospital, this past weekend.
Warrington had set a goal of raising R150,000 but after completing the 7.4km swim in 2 hours and 36 minutes, swimming in ‘skins’ – a small cozzy – in water temperatures of 13.2 degrees Celsius, he managed to raise over R160,000 to support the work of the SPCA’S animal hospital.
Looks like some heroes only wear Speedos.
Donations are still open if you’re feeling inspired this Monday morning.
The history-maker is as humble as ever, per SABC News:
“I have been a pet father. We care about our animals and there are the less fortunate that care as much, but do not have the financial means to take care of their pets, so we have to help. That is our responsibility and SPCA needs the support. I am happy that I have the opportunity to be a part of that.”
The SPCA thanked Warrington and everyone who donated to the cause.
“Thank you, Howard! You have touched hearts, inspired many, and have made a big difference for the animals in our care. You are our hero, with every stroke, enduring the cold water, waves and currents you were saving lives!
The water might have been cold, but all our hearts are warm.
