Sometimes, and hopefully, only in rare cases, children find themselves in the parental position.

A recent high school graduate is going viral for leaving their parents on a Caribbean island after they rushed to get back to the vessel on time and their parents continued shopping.

In a post shared to Reddit, the teenager says that their parents recently gifted them a family cruise in honour of turning 18 and graduating high school. The teen says they knew from the get-go that they would be in the parental role, needing to manage their folks’ time by warning “that if we went on excursions we had to follow the schedule no matter what.”

The poster went on to add that it was a week-long cruise, and at some point while exploring an island stopover, “they would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go,” the teen writes.

“They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals. I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off.”

Ultimately, the teen revealed that their parents missed the departure, “By a lot. Like 45 minutes.”

The teen added that they got hold of him through WhatsApp and “wanted to know why I didn’t get the boat to wait for them,” to which the dumbfounded teen said they “wanted to scream” at their parents “that they were not going to inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was.”

You tell ’em, son.

“They ended up having to fly to the next port from there and it was expensive,” the teen writes. “They are pissed at me for leaving them behind.”

Maybe they should be grateful that they didn’t have to pay for another seat on the plane, the brats.

Adding that their parents are now “making me miserable because I left without them,” the teen is asking the internet to confirm if they were in the wrong. Obviously, everyone is siding with the teen.

As you may know, cruise ships adhere to a strict schedule, and they won’t remain at the dock for people to spend more time shopping.

Remember that Norwegian Cruise that left a few passengers stranded, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, on the island of São Tomé and Príncipe because they were late to return from a private tour?

“The docks and ship have a schedule to keep,” the commenter who noted this wrote. “They are adults and need to be responsible for getting back on time. Which is something you have figured out in less than six months of being an adult. At least you don’t have to go on any more vacations with them after this.”

Other commenters couldn’t believe the parents’ audacity for expecting the ship to wait for them, with one writing, “Do they think if they arrive late to the airport the plane will wait around for a couple of hours? This is not rocket science. It’s a mode of transport, you get there on time.”

But ja, shame, sounds like the teen was the adult and the parents were the kids.
