Flat-pack giant, IKEA, is looking for 10 ‘real-life’ people to work in their in-game shop on Roblox.
Their virtual store opens on June 24, making them the first brand to offer paid work on the gaming platform.
IKEA described its move onto the Roblox platform as its “first foray into mainstream gaming,” saying “The Co-Worker Game” will give people “a chance to immerse themselves in the working world” of the store.
“This is not the typical IKEA job,” the Swedish flatpack giant said in the listing for jobs in its Roblox outlet. According to the job posting, potential applicants must evaluate how they would react to being transformed into pixels and what they would do if the store ran out of pixelated hotdogs.
The post also asks, “If you were a (piece of) pixelated IKEA furniture, which one would you be and why?”
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and live in the United Kingdom or Ireland and will work at various sections of the online store, assisting customers in selecting furniture and serving digital meatballs.
This fully remote job will pay $16.82 (R315) an hour – the same rate as a typical real-life IKEA employee in London. The salary is also similar to that of IKEA workers in the United States and more than double the US federal minimum wage.

For parents lucky enough not to know, Roblox allows users to play user-created games as well as create their own. It also incorporates features of a social media network, allowing users to meet friends and communicate with developers while exploring virtual worlds. It has gained in popularity in recent years, with over half of all US kids aged 12 to 17 using it on a monthly basis.
Walmart has also recently entered the chatroom with a virtual Roblox store that allows users to buy physical items and receive them in the mail. IKEA has however not confirmed whether users would be able to buy real-life products in-store.
It is too bad about the age restriction as my kid would have been an ideal candidate for this role, perhaps we could even recoup some of the thousands we’ve spent on Robux and virtual meatballs.
