The iPhone 15 has been out for over eight months, and the tech community is already buzzing with anticipation for Apple’s next handset – the iPhone 16.

This September is when we expect the new iPhones to land, as they do every year, but what exactly can we expect from the new iPhone 16’s features?

Between Forbes and CNET, this is everything we know about the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus on its way this spring.

Apparently, they’re set to have a new power-efficient display for larger screens, better zoom lenses, an action button and, perhaps not surprisingly, a suite of new AI-powered features.

Forbes reckons the Pro models will be moving up to larger screens, but the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will probably retain the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens. However, the phones may adopt the new OLED material called M14 for the displays, which is more power-efficient. You’ll have seen this powerful OLED screen on the new iPad, released earlier this month.

The most striking design transformation may very well be the repositioning of the dual cameras from a diagonal to a vertical alignment. This change could enable the iPhone 16 to capture spatial video—a feature currently exclusive to the Pro models in the existing lineup. The Action Button, a highly useful replacement for the mute/ring switch, also restricted to the Pro models in the current range, is also likely to land on all models in this next range.

In fact, it looks like all physical buttons could be replaced by capacitive buttons, which is pretty cool.

In terms of the camera, it is expected that the cameras on this year’s models will match the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which are 48 megapixels. However, in terms of the processor, you mightn’t expect the 16 and 16 Plus to employ the A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro. Rather, it is said that the new release will all use the A18, whether they’re a regular or a Pro model. Apple’s chips are always punchily fast, so whatever they’re called, we can expect strong performance.

The new iPhone could also have some AI tricks up its sleeve. Earlier in May, CEO Tim Cook went as far as saying he expects Apple to have an edge in AI, though the company is widely seen as being behind in the AI race.

To be sure, Apple’s iOS 18 could bring the “biggest” software update in the iPhone’s history, according to a January edition of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter.  Gurman also reported that iOS 18 will feature generative AI technology that “should improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences.”

There have been rumours suggesting Apple has been working on iPhone Flip models in two different sizes, though there have been difficulties in making the devices to Apple’s standards, so we’ll probably have to hold off on that reality for a while longer.

Again, the iPhone 16 is still presumably four months away and nothing will be confirmed until Apple’s iPhone event, so hang tight with these ideas and keep an eye on Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer that will be sure to stock the iPhone 16 when they hit stockists.

The retailer also offers a trade-in service, so if you want to swap your old (new) iPhone in for a brand-spanking new iPhone, at least you have options to make it affordable and doable.
