Muizenberg’s infamous bridge, which has been the site of many vehicles misjudging its height, has now officially become a ‘vigilante bridge’.

This time, a hijacked delivery vehicle collided with the popular railway bridge in Cape Town on Thursday morning.

A suspect tried to flee the scene, but a local security company arrested the driver of the vehicle shortly after he attempted to flee the scene.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a suspect was in custody after the bridge ate his getaway truck, saying “It has subsequently been determined that the vehicle was hijacked. The 27-year-old male, a resident of Langa, was detained at Muizenberg SAPS.”

Van Wyk did not confirm whether there was another person in the vehicle, however, JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security in Cape Town, said there were two people inside the vehicle.

The Muizenberg community Facebook group dedicated to the bridge has spoken:

According to Smith, the vehicle had been travelling at an increased speed, “ignoring the flashing warning signs”, indicating that the vehicle was over the height limit – a rookie mistake.

“It lifted the front of the truck and slammed the driver’s compartment underneath the bridge, and both occupants were catapulted into the windshield. Dazed, both occupants sat injured on the sidewalk as a crowd gathered,” said Smith.

“At this point, both occupants took off running in different directions, with one of the suspects heading back towards the main road, where a getaway vehicle was waiting. The other suspect fled in the direction of Strandfontein, but was quickly apprehended by one of the local security companies.”

The bridge has had numerous encounters with vehicles over the years, despite a sign warning motorists about height restrictions. Affectionately referred to as ‘Bridget’ by locals, it even has its own Facebook page called Muizenberg’s Famous Truck-Eating Bridge.

This time, nobody is complaining.
