Are you looking to live an extraordinary life of adventure free from peasants? Say less!
This secluded medieval-style, castle-like home that sits on a hill surrounded by woods across more than six acres in Oakland County is one of the most unique houses in southeast Michigan, America.
Located at the end of Deer Creek Estates, a gated subdivision of luxury homes, this private property is the perfect place for kings and queens, even if self-ascribed.
But it’s going to cost a fair penny – say $2,2 million, which is just a little over R40 million.
You get what you pay for, with a frame built with 60 tons of steel, complete with a moat, a waterfall, a drawbridge, a dungeon, a portcullis (gate), 26 rooms, an elevator, five fireplaces, secret rooms, hidden doors, hidden passageways, hidden staircase, a wine cellar, a Tudor style pub, and a few more surprises.
Built in 1990, construction took over six years utilising artisans from all over the world. Detroit Free Press notes that the fairytale home was the culmination of a 20-year dream of the late James LeBlanc, who made a promise to his wife, Vera, on Christmas in 1969 that he would build her a castle, according to one of the listing agents Mike Kuligowski of Signature Sotheby’s International Realty.
“Money was no object, it was designed to entertain, to have people over,” he said.
Once inside, guests are greeted in the foyer by a fully armoured guard statue, complete with a sword.
On the first floor, there’s a bright and open living room and dining room with several chandeliers and pillars with marble inlay and detailed woodwork on walls and ceilings.
There are mirrored walls, a library with a loft and secret doors, a family room, a guest suite, a gourmet kitchen and a grand staircase with royal red-coloured carpet over wood steps leading to the second level.
There’s a surprise in just about every room: hidden closets, escape rooms, a hidden spiral staircase that leads to the roof, hidden passageways between walls, lofts, tables that fold out of walls, a trap door to a dungeon, a hidden underground grotto with jacuzzi, a hallway of mirrors and roof access to battlements.
The four-car, attached garage has a Charles Dickens-era Streets of London theme and lights in the ceiling that represent stars.
In terms of its more modern features, per the listing, “The castle cost more than $10 million to build and has a laundry list of recent upgrades including 6 new high-efficiency furnaces + air conditioners, new humidifiers, new boiler, new hot water storage tank, the elevator was serviced and certified in 2022, $100K in window/door upgrades, and about $20k in electrical updates.”
There’s so much more to this property than meets the eye, but take a video tour anyway:
Some brave soul from the internet asked “Why would I pay $ 2.3 million for this castle when I can simply raid it along with my valiant knights for free?” – and now we can’t help but wonder the same thing.
