Hundreds of the world’s leading climate scientists say that the planet is headed for at least 2.5C of heating in this century, with disastrous results for humanity.
The temperature rise will be far beyond pre-industrial levels and blast way past internationally agreed targets, causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet, according to a recent survey.
Many scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.
Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.
Many of the experts said they had been left “feeling hopeless, infuriated and scared by the failure of governments to act despite the clear scientific evidence provided”.
Among them is Gretta Pecl from the University of Tasmania, who believes “Authorities will be overwhelmed by extreme event after extreme event, food production will be disrupted. I could not feel greater despair over the future.”
“We are headed for major societal disruption within the next five years.”
Despite the depressing findings of this survey, scientists say the fight against climate change needs to continue as “every fraction of a degree avoided would reduce human suffering”. It seems to now be about damage control instead of avoidance.
Since 2018, every available lead author or review editor of IPCC reports was contacted for the poll by The Guardian. Out of 843 responses, 380 were nearly half. The IPCC’s reports, which are authored by specialists in the social and physical sciences and have been endorsed by all governments, are the gold standard evaluations of climate change.
Based on the results, a large number of the world’s most knowledgeable people predict that the next few decades will see widespread climate disruption.
“This is just the beginning: buckle up.”
Massive preparations were now required, according to the scientists, to shield humanity from the worst of the impending climate disasters.
The target of 1.5C was adopted to avert the worst effects of the climate catastrophe and is widely regarded as a crucial benchmark for global negotiations. With current climate policies, global warming is expected to reach roughly 2.7C.
This is not good news people, but at least now we know why billionaires have been building bunkers in Hawaii.
