Our very own amapiano singer and ‘Water’ hit-maker, Tyla, wins the Met Gala 2024.
Okay, not really, but setting herself in sand and being carried around the red carpet by a gaggle of good-looking men is pretty iconic.
It’s safe to say Tyla traded sand for water at her inaugural Met. For the night’s ‘The Garden of Time’ dress code, the Balmain team fashioned Tyla a skintight dress made of sand – a nod to the sands of time.
The outfit was so statuesque that the little Saffa had to be carried around the whole night – something she owned as if she were truly royalty.

As mentioned, Tyla’s ’fit is a homage to the “sands of time,” with the garment’s fabric having an ultra-cool sandy texture to it, which Tyla outfitted with sand-like makeup over her shoulders and a functional hourglass that doubled as her handbag.
You know you need the details:

When asked whether she’d be able to sit for the dinner portion of the event inside the museum, the celeb iconically said, “Who knows? They’ll figure it out…Who cares, guys? I look cute.”
Now that we’ve got the finest look done and dusted, we’re moving on to the other weird and wonderful delights found on the stairs of the Met, which took place last night in New York City.
Lights, camera, all the hairspray, a power pose, and we have Gwendoline Christie…looking interesting… wearing a velvet gown and sheer tulle cape by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.
Zendaya appears to have taken her look to a mysterious and magical place with this Maison Margiela gown by John Galliano that matched up perfectly to the actor’s dark and dramatic makeup.
Rita Ora was also a little extra in her Marni dress which, according to her, was made using beads collected from Europe and Northern Africa during the 1st century BC. Her husband, the film director Taika Waititi, looked suitably paired, too.
Then, Kylie Minogue’s take on the naked dress was meant to make her “look as though she’s been sleeping in this dress for hundreds of years,” according to Diesel designer Glenn Martens.
Another take on the naked dress was from model and writer Emily Ratajkowski.
Gigi Hadid also needed the help of at least five people to carry her and her dress up the Met steps. That’s not all the labour that went into her Thom Browne design, which took over 13,000 hours and 70 people to make.
Kim K played around with the idea that hard/soft is the new high/low in fashion with her ‘armoured lace’ look from John Galliano for Maison Margiela:
Sydney Sweeney swapped her usual blonde for a black bob and wore a tulle Miu Miu gown. I guess that’s what happens when you’re tired of being swooned over.
Lana Del Rey came with the fantastical in a creation by new Alexander McQueen creative director Seán McGirr, who said he based the look on McQueen’s 2006 The Widows of Culloden collection. She may be better suited in the Narnia closet, in all honesty.
Doja Cat came in an extremely extra wet t-shirt look by Swiss fashion house Vetements.
Don’t stare at Lizzo for too long or she might suddenly blend into a lampshade at the Mad Hatter’s tea party thanks to her sculptural look by Paris-based label Weinsanto.
It was Cardi B who basically shut down the Met carpet in Windowsen couture, needing more than 10 assistants to help her fan out her gigantic gown, which just ended up blocking the way for everyone else.
That’s it – everybody stepped into the black hole that is Cardi B’s dress and disappeared to some lavish otherworldly planet where they all compete in an endless loop to be the most memorable celeb.
