One of the best things about pizza is that there is a flavour for everyone. Whether you’re a vegetarian, a meat lover, or a rebel with a pineapple fetish, pizza can have it all.
The classic Margherita pizza is, however, the most accessible pizza there is, made with simple and fresh ingredients like tomatoes, fresh basil leaves and mozzarella cheese.
Despite its simplicity, the humble Margherita’s origins are rumoured to be quite regal. The pizza is named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, who is said to have been presented with a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag.
The story goes that in 1889, in honour of the Queen’s visit to Naples with her husband King Umberto I, a local pizzamaker named Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi created a pizza with the colours of the Italian flag: tomato (red), mozzarella (white), and basil (green). The Queen was so delighted with the pizza that it was named after her, and since then, the Margherita pizza has become one of the most popular pizzas in the world.
Some food critics (there always are) argue that a kind of pizza similar to this was made between 1976 and 1810 in Naples, however, it was not called Margherita at that time.
There’s yet another theory behind the nomenclature, which suggests that the word ‘Margherita’ translates to ‘daisy’ in Italian, and the pizza was named so because of the daisy-shaped arrangement of the toppings.
We prefer the Queen of Savoy connection, but whichever story you believe, don’t let anyone ever call you boring for favouring a Margherita pizza.
Butler’s Pizza has now added to the royal pizza bloodline by creating the Pop’s Princess, named in honour of their GM – how sweet! It’s made with basil pesto, tomato, feta, onion and Butleritos, and looks exactly like supper.
We might just have dinner with the royals tonight, with the Rotherham 2 as dessert.
