A Sassa office in Mpumalanga had to be closed when employees refused to return after CCTV footage showed an alleged sangoma performing ‘witchcraft’ by sprinkling muti on colleagues’ desks. At the same time, another man was seen carrying what appeared to be a snake.
The incident was recorded on April 12, showing the men moving between cubicles while sprinkling ‘a liquid’. Two officials from the office have now been suspended for performing the ritual in the office, where needles were also found lying around.
The office has been vacant for two weeks after officials refused to return to work.

Sassa spokesperson in Mpumalanga Senzeni Ngubeni said the two officials involved have since been suspended pending investigations.
“We have found out that two of our officials were involved in the incident. As it stands, they have been suspended. Investigation into their conduct is underway.
“We have arranged with the municipality to use the community hall while we clean and fumigate the office. Members of the public have been informed to use the community hall,” said Ngubeni.
