The massive ‘black hole’ weather anomaly that materialised over Cape Town in the early hours has left many puzzled.
While its true nature remains uncertain, some speculate that it may be of extraterrestrial origin.
The unexplained weather phenomenon appeared on satellites for just a few seconds, with someone on Reddit posting about finding it to the west of southern Africa from about 8PM on 9 April to about 5AM on the 12th, before it “vanished”.
The strange satellite images show that 25-metre waves were spotted off the coast, which suddenly just disappeared for no reason, with a giant black hole appearing on the imagery instead, reported Daily Star.
According to weather site Ventusky, which uses satellite data, the black mass moves towards land, before suddenly fading out right before it touches down in Cape Town.
To make matters more confusing, footage also emerged of the giant anomaly starting somewhere near Antarctica, before making the trip to our region where it disappeared.
One explained: “They use satellites with precise measuring instruments that cross reference data for accuracy, so the data is legit so long as it isn’t a glitch/bug in the visualization software which is probably pretty likely.”
Someone else suggested that it could have been “underwater seismic activity,” while another claimed that it was some kind of “mobile UFO”:
“Holy shit its that mobile ufo base that moved all over the ocean and makes custom ufos on demand. It also attacks anyone (like military for ex) who tries to approach it, instant death.”
However, many pointed out that if a UFO was moving that fast, it would have caused the largest tsunami in history.
Meanwhile, another Redditor referenced an ‘underwater anomaly’ that was similar in shape to this one, which had apparently appeared on Google Earth only to be “scrubbed from the map” recently.

Someone with a bit more sense posted about constructive wave interference from multiple ocean currents converging and producing rogue waves, something that happens in the Cape from time to time:
“Rogue waves are open-water phenomena, in which winds, currents, nonlinear phenomena such as solitons, and other circumstances cause a wave to briefly form that is far larger than the “average” large wave (the significant wave height or “SWH”) of that time and place. The basic underlying physics that makes phenomena such as rogue waves possible is that different waves can travel at different speeds, so they can “pile up” in certain circumstances, known as “constructive interference”. (In deep ocean, the speed of a gravity wave is proportional to the square root of its wavelength, the peak-to-peak distance between adjacent waves.) However, other situations can also give rise to rogue waves, particularly situations where nonlinear effects or instability effects can cause energy to move between waves and be concentrated in one or very few extremely large waves before returning to “normal” conditions.”
Once considered mythical and lacking hard evidence, rogue waves are now proven to exist and are known to be natural ocean phenomena.
Another person taking a more sensible approach suggested that the data source for the layer showing the anomaly is a predictive model.
“I’m presuming this is based on data gathered from buoys then extrapolated out into propagation models.”
“I feel like one or two of those catching a big wake from a ship might cause it to predict a large swell like that, although it seems a bit large. Maybe a rogue wave hit a couple sensors and threw the model out, but I feel like the huge country-sized swell has to be an error in the prediction model.”
Whether the system was maxed out, or the waves piled up, nobody can say for sure…which means the truth is still out there.
