Joaquin Phoenix reprises his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, alongside Lady Gaga as the equally twisted Harley Quinn, in the newly released trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux.
The film opens in Arkham Asylum, where Joker was imprisoned at the end of the first film, while Arthur Fleck has a crazed “meet cute” with another patient (Gaga’s Harley Quinn).
After the accidental encounter in the prison halls, they fall madly in love and break free from their straight jackets to face the world outside their padded cells. From there the pair of misfits head out into the streets of Gotham, where they manically dance and swirl around the city.
If it sounds familiar, it is because the Joker/Harley Quinn romance has been done before, albeit with disappointing performances by Jared Leto and Margot Robbie. Hollywood seems to stick with the same films, just redoing it with better actors when the original doesn’t make money. Anyway, back to the new version.
The first picture had a dark origin story for the Joker, a lonely, failing stand-up comedian and part-time clown. In the sequel, Joker takes his show on the road, performing on various stages with Harley Quinn as his crazy muse with complimentary Joker makeup. Joker finally has a mate as mad as him.
“I’ll tell you what’s changed,” Joker says in the trailer. “I’m not alone anymore — that’s what we should be talking about!”
Director Todd Phillips debuted the footage at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theatre owners. Although the original 2019 Joker was billed as a “one-off,” Phillips said he and Phoenix always talked about making a sequel.
“We loved the character of Arthur too much, but we didn’t want to jinx the [original] movie,” Phillips said. “We cast Gaga because she’s magic.”
Little is known about the actual plot of the sequel, which is reportedly a ‘jukebox musical’. Phillips however said the categorisation isn’t entirely accurate, though it will feature plenty of song and dance numbers.
Joker became a massive blockbuster with $1 billion at the global box office. It became the first R-rated film to pass the billion-dollar mark and earned 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
Joker 2 will debut on the big screen on October 4th — five years after the first film.
