The City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management division is investigating the source of an ‘extremely loud rumble or blast’, heard by many people – from Mowbray to Parklands on Wednesday afternoon.
The prevailing idea is that it was either a quarry blast or an earthquake.
The spokesperson for the Council for Geoscience, Mahlatse Mononela, said its systems showed no seismic activity in and around Cape Town on Wednesday.
The council’s website recorded a number of small seismic events on Wednesday – in Viljoenskroon, Fochville, Emalahleni and Grootvlei – but not in Cape Town.
Earthquake Monitor reported an “unconfirmed seismic-like event” near Cape Town at 17:39.

“We are investigating – ourselves and fire services,” said the spokesperson for the disaster risk management division, Charlotte Powell.
“We can’t find anything. No emergency services have been activated and there were no calls to the control room.”
Locals were quick to jump onto social media after the earth rumbled.
Everything just shook, rattled and rolled in @CapeTown 😯 Could that tremor have been a mini earthquake?!

Was it just me or was there some sort of an Earthquake Phenomenon in Cape Town again?

Some rattled Capetonians even invoked the Bible to explain the earthquake/not the earthquake.
Yetser Energy was seen and felt today in Cape Town, we saw lightning, rumbling of sound of thunder and earthquake, this is very significant in history and only recorded in The Bible.

Maybe the Cape is just buckling under all the Gauteng peeps flocking South. For now, nobody knows.
