Cape Town has another cherry on its cake of cool.
Bree Street has been named the 11th ‘coolest street’ in the world in a recently released TimesOut ranking. The cool accolade follows the Wall Street Journal calling it “Cape Town’s hippest street”.
Hip and cool are suitable descriptions for the road in the heart of Cape Town, which runs parallel with dodgy Loop and Long.
For centuries now this vibrant lane has served as a key cultural hub and has established itself as an ‘exciting culinary destination in the Mother City’, according to various food publications.
The name ‘Bree’ originates from the English adaptation of the Dutch word ‘breë’, signifying ‘broad’ or ‘wide’. This name was chosen because the town’s layout was specifically designed to accommodate ox-wagons making U-turns.
Going forward, this busy strip in Cape Town is set for another revamp, with TimesOut contributor Richard Holems saying that in 2025, it will see the “redevelopment of the City Park building, a former hospital which will become a multifunctional hub of apartments, restaurants, co-working spaces and a design-driven international hotel brand.”
Locals would of course know Bree Street as the place to find the best burgers in town (Clarkes), the best weed in town (The Alibi), and the best ‘entertainment’ in town (122 Bree Street).
There is obviously so much more to this street to discover, so if you have grown weary of fearfully clutching your purse in Long Street, check out the top 15 restaurants in the 11th coolest street in the world.
