South Africa has a lot to boast about, and Rooibos tea is one of them.
The world-famous tea, otherwise known as African Red Bush tea, qualified to join the likes of Champagne, Darjeeling Tea and Columbian Coffee as a member of the exclusive geographically-protected product club.
If this is granted, the rules governing the use of the term “Rooibos” on new product trademark applications will stipulate that applicants cannot call a product Rooibos unless it contains 100% Rooibos or it is the main ingredient.
With this new Geographical Indicator status, Saffas can finally stick up their nose like the French and say, ‘No honey, it’s not Rooibos unless it’s from our country’.
But you might want to know what Rooibos is all about before you do that. Sprawled across an approximately 60,000-hectare belt along the Western Coast, lies the Rooibos Route – your gateway to all the knowledge you need about what makes Mzansi’s famous tea so lekker and local.
Getaway shared a pick of local tea tours to take part in along the Rooibos Route, which we couldn’t help but delve into as well.
First up is a tour of the Groenkol Rooibos Tea Estate with Elandsberg Eco Tourism:
South Africa’s Rooibos Route winds through the Cederberg, showcasing how bountiful the area can be. Groenkol Rooibos Tea Estate is one such area boasting one of the region’s largest tea plantations. Here, amidst a rich tapestry of Fynbos, including the renowned Rooibos, lies a slice of the Cape Floral Region’s natural splendour.
Embark on a guided exploration with Elandsberg Eco Tourism, offering immersive experiences like a one-hour tour of the tea farm or a seasonal safari through the diverse Fynbos landscape. Delight in discovering the intricate rock formations dotting the farm, integral to the delicate ecosystem of the Cape Floral Region.
As the tour concludes, indulge in the exquisite flavours of spiced Rooibos tea, a speciality of the estate, and peruse the curated selection of Rooibos products at the estate shop, capturing the essence of this unique South African treasure.
Then, Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge, renowned for its citrus and grape farm, offers guests the opportunity to explore a nearby Rooibos farm twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Delve into the fascinating process of Rooibos cultivation and processing while discovering why the Cederberg region holds such esteemed status in global Rooibos production.
Additionally, immerse yourself in the world of Rooibos at the House of Rooibos, where a video presentation awaits along with delightful tea-tasting sessions and a captivating array of Rooibos products for sale.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, the Cape Floral Kingdom boasts a rich diversity of species, particularly evident in its Fynbos. Skimmelberg farm, nestled amidst the majestic mountain slopes, cultivates two significant crops: Buchu and Rooibos, both naturally occurring in this pristine environment.

The farm specialises in the production, export, and sale of organic Buchu and Rooibos tea products, showcasing sustainable farming practices. Visitors are treated to an immersive experience, witnessing these plants in their natural habitat and gaining insight into their organic cultivation methods. After the tour, guests have the opportunity to indulge in a unique tea-tasting session hosted by the Skimmelberg team, followed by an exploration of the innovative world of Buchu-based products. For those seeking souvenirs, the farm’s shop offers a selection of Buchu and Rooibos delights.
A bonus awaits visitors during the flower season in September and October, when the vibrant wildflowers in full bloom provide a breathtaking spectacle, enhancing the overall guest experience.
Lastly, on route to Bergendal lies the home of Carmién Tea, a local producer, exporter and manufacturer of Rooibos.

Carmién offers a visit to the Rooibos fields during weekdays, where you’ll learn about Rooibos production on the farm, from crop to cup – including the subtle varieties in species there, and traditional harvesting practices used. You’ll then head to the tea factory to get an inside scoop on how Rooibos is refined, from fermentation to sorting. Guests may also enjoy tea tasting and a special video screening during the Harvest Season (January – April).
Carmién also stocks a Tea Shop at De Tol Farm Deli, outside of Citrusdal on the N7. There, guests enjoy pairing tea with food and wine – a unique experience not to miss out on.
